Jay Z dropped the hyphen, and a horrible album “Thank you Samsung”

Jay(no dash)Z dropped Magna Carta Holy Grail at 12am on July 4th. This is his 11th solo album and the worst of his career.

I’m a huge Jay-Z fan. He happens to be my favorite rapper, so it hurts me to say, “Magna Carta Holy Grail, is an epic disaster. Not only is it the worst album of his career, but it is the worst hip hop album this year.” Holy Grail is an utter disappointment. Personally I had to listen to the album 3 times just to come to terms with the fact that, “Damn…this things sucks.”

I’m so confused by this album. Usually great artist (like Jay-Z) will have a vision or some kind message they try to get across with an album. When it comes to the Magna Carta, that vision is non-existent. However I think the message is clear. “Samsung paid me a whole bunch of money and I got to get that paper.”

This album is all Samsung hype. I should have seen it when they drop that weird impromptu commercial during the NBA Finals. You know the commercial that supposedly showed how detailed the album would be. The commercial that had all the great hip-hop producers of the last decade lying barefoot on the couch. Yeah it was same commercial that told you to buy a Samsung phone, so you could get the album before it was released in stores. Because we all know nothing said hip-hop like Samsung.

This album was essential a commercial for Samsung, in which Jay-Z was used as their newest pop-culture vehicle to push product. On the other hand Jay-Z used Samsung as his newest pawn in the mission to become the most powerful man in the world (Dr. Evil style). I was one of the so called first million people to download The Magna Carta app, and get the album for free. The fact that I didn’t have to pay for this album, makes The Holy Grail’s proverbial kick in the nuts sting a little less. However I will never be the same. I can’t wipe away all the confusion this album gave me. For the rest of my life I will ask myself, “Who the hell is Tom Ford?”
